More About Me…
Thank you for joining me here at MarkHing.com. I created this site for techheads who also like to do myriad non-tech-heady activities using modern tools and theories. I love to learn and discover simpler, more effective ways of doing things in general, but particularly in the spaces of software and investing. I’m continually testing new concepts and jumping into uncharted waters — just to see what happens.
Living on Canada’s majestic West Coast, I’m fortunate to have year-round access to mountains, lakes and the ocean to pursue interests — such as photography — but Vancouver also offers a thriving tech-scene with the latest gear and software opportunities.
The melding of these two worlds, in a city regularly voted amongst the most beautiful on the planet, keeps me on my toes and constantly exploring cutting-edge ideas with the goal of sharing my expertise with people who get excited about the same things I do.

Vancouver, British Columbia
Vancouver and Vancouver Island are home to some of the world’s most beautiful scenery and enjoy thriving tech communities. They’re a perfect blend of the outdoors and indoors… making them, for me anyways, great places to live and work.
I’m the President of Aptus Communications Inc., a Boutique FinTech software and consulting firm that specializes in bringing proven investment strategies and applications to individual investors.
We don’t do get-rich-quick investing schemes but instead focus on Value Investing strategies with a bit of Machine Learning and Robo-Advisor pieces thrown in when it makes sense.

I’m also a Smallworld developer with more than 25 years of GIS experience. I’ve published numerous articles, taught at colleges and large corporations, presented papers at a variety of technical conferences and been the editor of a technology magazine called, Computer|Sense.

The Arts and Software Engineering
I’m a big believer in living a well-rounded life… so that means enjoying a healthy dollop of both Artistic and Software endeavors. I’ve found experience with music, photography, writing and even woodworking help to bring fresh perspectives and design ideas to software development.
In addition, I’m the author of, The Pragmatic Investor, book and am currently working on my first novel, Fable World (a Science Fiction space opera that is growing faster than the appetite of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal).

Outside those interests I play hockey, write songs, work with wood, build electronics projects and take photographs.

I grew up in Vancouver and now make my home on Vancouver Island.
So poke around the site, have fun, and if you think of any questions or comments, feel free to drop me a line.
